The Negative

A counterculture visual chamber of rupture and revelation from the edge of empire. This is The Negative — where exposure becomes remembrance.

The Netherlands
This windmill in Zaanse Schans goes by the name of De Kat. It's the only remaining windmill in the world that produces paint, and dates back to 1646. The mill grinds materials like chalk to produce the pigments used in paints. It was actually originally built as an oil mill, but in 1782, it was destroyed by a fire. When the windmill was rebuilt, it was changed in order to produce paint.
